Days of Change

The Billionaire Boys Club | December 10, 2016

Rex Tillerson caps off a Trump cabinet heavy on CEOs and light on bureaucrats. It is also clearly lacking in the conservative visionaries like Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin who were rumored to have a chance at some cabinet posts. Chris Christie was dumped early on and Rudy Giuliani had no interest in a second-place job.

Given the choice of Tillerson, CEO of Exxon as Secretary of State, someone like Mitt Romney might have been more of a compromise candidate. Romney is not quite a billionaire (he’s worth around a quarter of that) but he was a governor and he turned around both businesses and government projects like the Salt Lake City Olympics.

The choice of CEOs for a number of positions seems to indicate that Donald Trump considers various agencies to be financial entities that need management and likely cost-cutting. This is something like the conservative theory that the free market is best, even with a government budget. So far, this is what a Trump administration is all about.
