Down, Ticket | May 6, 2016

Only Trump can be Trump. I use this in the template of “only Nixon could go to China.”

Trump’s campaign is about 75% name recognition. People go to his rallies because he’s a famous person. People interview him because he gets ratings. Voters select him because they only know the other candidates by the trash talking Trump used to define them. So, how in the hell do other Republicans get elected when they’re not Donald Trump?

I don’t think they can.

Legal Insurrection wrote about the down ticket Senate races where Republicans have to defend a number of 2010 Tea Party wins. Many of them have to face either not endorsing Trump and being assaulted by Trump twitter trolls or endorsing him and being destroyed by a media campaign. They can’t Trump their way into a victory. If Donald Trump gets a Democratic Party¬†Senate, his bravado and a couple bucks can get him a cup of non-Colombian coffee.

This is definitely speculation, but remember that coattails are small enough under regular politics. Donald Trump has shown little interest in what the Republican Party is now, only what a Trumplican Party will be. Since he doesn’t have a slate of candidate, it may end up looking like a bunch of hostile Democrats. I wonder how long they’ll hold up the Supreme Court appointment of the next Scalia?

  1. I’m not sure that they can’t endorse Trump.

    • Trump may defy political gravity, but other Republicans don’t. Supporting Trump will lead to a lot of money being thrown at them by Democrats calling them Trump clones. Unlike Trump, they will walk back their support.

Supporting Trump does not mean being Trump. I don’t think getting on the Trump train is sufficient.
