A New Reason why New York Sucks | April 1, 2016

New York state passed a multi-year budget with more unfunded and hard to fund mandates. The minimum wage will jump between $1.50 and $2.00 per year until it reaches $15 per hour, depending on the part of the state and how economically depressed it is. That increase will be blunted by a mandatory fee paid by all workers to create a pool for paying people at least half their pay for extended family medical and emergency leave.

I think Margaret Thatcher said it best when she explained that Socialist governments run out of other people’s money. The grants and benefits bestowed by the state all come from the taxes people or businesses pay the state. The people get of a little easier because they have more power to revolt and vote out the legislature. Businesses who hope to stay in New York had better be doing something the state likes so they can get grants. In NYC< Governor Cuomo had gone after the fast food industry by creating a higher minimum wage as a sort of McDonald’s tax.

New York and California have been throwing their legislative weight around, creating a $15 an hour wage that will have the effect of reducing jobs, creating more automation in low-value positions and making the states less competitive with states in the South which have better weather and fewer freaks. Eventually, the minimum will keep going up until most people will earn near minimum wage because employers can’t pay high value employees more.

  1. Yet again, this legislation puts me closer to minimum wage because I only make so much above it already. Will this raise my wage? Probably not as fast as the minimum goes up. I do know that the razor thin margin that we try to maintain with American assembly at my company will be impacted and we could lose people to places like the Red Lobster nearby.
