Days of Change

If You Can Make it There, You’re Probably a Leftist | January 15, 2016

Four years ago, I gave a weak but honest endorsement of Mitt Romney for president. He had the support of the party and a group of Tea Party candidates continued to fracture support. Also, the lack of Tea Party money, tied up by the IRS, basically kept them from gaining traction.

Mitt Romney never gained general election momentum because he was honest about his style. He was conservative, but he was also a technocrat who had supported abortion in the past and continued to defend Romneycare. Donald Trump is very much the opposite.

As a Republican, I don’t want the party to be blown apart to turn the system on its ear. The Democrats would merely take advantage of the wreckage. For all intents and purposes, there was no Republican Party between 1932 and 1952, and look how well that turned out. Trump is running for the Trump Party. Unfortunately, money and influence has pushed out 2012 style Tea Party candidates. Donald Trump  has his own money and influence and is using America’s love of “snark” along with talking points he didn’t believe in 5 years ago to corner the market.

I endorsed Romney on January 6, 2012 since there was no other way forward. That may be the case with Trump. But even if he wins, we all lose. Much like Islamic leaders or er, FDR, promising to make things great again leaves you out of a job if you do it.

    • The Hitler comparison was too much. When you talk about making America great again, if you fix all the problems, people tend to get bored of you. A better example would be FDR who peddled fear for a decade and nothing got better. But he kept getting reelected.
