Days of Change

Anytime is a Good Time for Movies | January 23, 2015

I read about the movie adaption of the improbably book “50 Shades of Grey” that premieres on Valentine’s Day. The movie is very similar to 2002’s “Secretary” but with less realism. The important thing for me is that “Kingsman: The Secret Service” will open on the same weekend. Kingsman is offbeat, a throwback to British spies like the Avengers and some James Bond. It also seems to be nakedly anti-American, which I can understand given the country’s current leadership.

Kingsman was originally scheduled for a Fall release. Grey has an obsessive fan base who would see it any time of year. Putting these movies in February seems to be a way of avoiding competition, albeit at a time of year when people don’t frequent as many movies. Those of us in Northern climates have good reason to avoid going out. Still, the theaters have to heat the buildings and sell the popcorn.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie in January until American Sniper. Usually, January is the time for Oscar hopefuls that opened in select cities just ahead of the December 31 deadline. Most don’t do well. American Sniper has pulled numbers rivaling big budget blockbusters. The theater I went to was packed. I think a of theater managers are kicking themselves for not putting it on more screens.

I wonder if “Hollywood” has learned that spreading out the movie schedule may be an advantage for movies that have different levels of competitiveness. I have a sneaking suspicion that there isn’t a huge crossover between fans of Kingsman vs. fans of Grey. I might actually see more than 3 movies this year.

  1. 15, to be truthful, the last movie I really enjoyed was “My Fair Lady.” So much for Middle-class Mary.

    • ABC made a TV show from that story line called “Selfie.” You probably wouldn’t have liked it.

      • Doesn’t sound like I would have. Sorry to be a wet blanket, 15; I’m just not hip, nor do I care to be.
