Support System | January 7, 2015

At least 12 were killed in an attack at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, including four cartoonists. This magazine tended to mock institutions like organized religion, but faced violence when they mocked Islam and so-called prophet Mohammed. Their previous offices were burned down and now many of the staff were murdered, including the editor who approved the cartoons that led to outrage.

What we have now are two opposing political and cultural camps saying two things. One talks about how this attack was committed by a few individuals and was not authorized by a particular entity. Another blames this on Islamic groups that seem to be offended in a way that requires them to murder the opposition. The fact is that both sides are right, just incomplete.

If the Pope issued an execution order on apostates, the Catholic Church would be responsible, as a whole, due to the structure of the faith. Many other religions do not have a top-down hierarchy. This has been interpreted by some as absolving everyone from being responsible for any crime done in the name of their religion. I think the reality is the opposite. The religion is all the people who make up that faith. The church is not a building, but the people in it.

Time and time again, we have been able to scratch the surface of some “moderate” mosque or Muslim organization to find them funding an arm of Hamas or worse. Anyone with a microphone can be called an Imam it seems, especially since no one wants to dispute those despots. ISIS is considered a group that does not follow some true path of Islam, but it claims more Muslims in its controlled areas than are contained in the United States.

Patting Muslims on the head and telling them over and over that they aren’t responsible for criminal organizations using their religious texts is bullshit. Secular governments have made concessions to Islam in their countries as a response to a perceived intolerance in the past. There was a good reasons for wars against Muslims in the past. Their religious leadership also started holy wars and the major powers in Europe at the time (including the Catholic Church) chose to stop them.

A “moderate” Muslim has three choices. Denounce their religious leadership, renounce what the religion has become, or become the enemy to freedom because they form the support system that makes Muslim terror possible.

  1. Strong post, 15.

You’re right: the murdering zealots exist because other Muslims either do not rebuke them or applaud them. Whether it is explicit or implicit, it is support. And among non-

    • They already are. Charlie Hebdo and other European publications are staffed by atheist, leftist progressives. This coalition between them and the pitiable Muslims is about to break apart.
