Day 1230 – Obama is not a Socialist*

March 18, 2012

Famed British fiction writer George Orwell provided a list of people he believed to be Communists to his government in the late 40s. He was not bullied or coerced into it. He was an anti-Communist and believed it was important to expose those who worked for that cause. If Obama is not a socialist, Orwell was one.

Terms like “liberal” and “conservative” take on meanings beyond their dictionary classifications. Conservatism is going back to it’s verbal roots, with the Tea Party arguing for a government more like the one of the days when the Constitution was new. Social mores, however, are more of a mash up of personal liberty and personal accountability with far too much government money involved in each. Liberals are losing their definition, wanted to force orthodoxy and a single government solution on fiscal and social issues, along with a mandate that religion be a shame to be hidden away once a week and never make it to the public square.

I digress. Liberals these says are also more proud than ever to declare themselves socialists, with a caveat. *Socialism is defined as a European type where people have the ability to do what they want with the protection of cradle-to-grave social programs. Under that narrow definition, Obama is not a socialist. Of course, that definition doesn’t really exist. Thatcher pointed out that eventually socialism runs out of other people’s money and that is the case in any number of member of the Euro Zone. Rich people cannot pay for a population not driven by greed and yes, fear, to produce enough value to keep a government functioning.

By most accounts, Orwell was that kind of socialist, even though he seemed to have a disdain for English Socialism as expressed in the novel “1984.” His criticisms were of a totalitarian state where Big Brother was always watching, history was constantly rewritten and everyone had to be broken to succeed. I have to argue, however, that socialism and totalitarianism go hand in hand. It took more than 35 years, but Great Britain has cameras at every corner, online publications that can be redacted with little trace and a permissive culture is used to silence anyone who doesn’t agree with the majority.

I don’t know how much Orwell Andrew Breitbart read, but he seemed to get the point. Republicans and Democrats alike will sell out the American people for more power. The real goal is to get ideas out to people, not ideology. When Americans learned that there was an alternative to spending money to grow the economy or taking over industries to make them better, they flocked to it. This so-called AstroTurf Republican movement saw many Republicans against it fall. Socialism isn’t bad because it redistributes wealth, it’s bad because redistributing wealth is ineffective. Socialism is bad because you eventually need totalitarianism to propel it. Look at China. Their free market stops at ideas because someone might figure out that they’re broke and playing an enormous shell game on the United States.

During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.

-George Orwell
